Tip Calculator
Tip = Bill × (Tip % / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Example:
If Bill = $100 and Tip = 15%, then:
Tip = 100 × 15% = $15
Total = 100 + 15 = $115
If split among 3 people:
Each Pays = 115 ÷ 3 = $38.33
A tip or gratuity is an extra sum of money paid to certain service workers for a provided service. Tip amounts, as well as acceptance, vary in different parts of the world.
In some countries in East Asia, such as Japan, tips are seen as insulting and can sometimes be interpreted as a bribe. In yet other countries, such as the United States, tipping is widely expected, and in many cases, is even factored into a service worker’s compensation towards satisfying the minimum wage requirement.
This is important to note, since although tipping is entirely voluntary, many servers depend on tips to make a living in countries like the United States. As such, as a tourist, it can be helpful to research the tipping customs in the countries being visited. In the U.S. or any other country where tipping is expected, depending on the restaurant or the number of patrons at a table, gratuity may be automatically applied to the bill amount.
As previously mentioned, tipping can be offensive in some countries, so although a citizen of the United States that is visiting another country may want to express their appreciation of the service provided, the gesture may, in some cases, result in the opposite effect.
Below is a map that provides some information regarding whether or not a tip is expected, or how a tip may be received in certain regions, as well as a table of typical tip amounts in the United States and Canada for different services.

Tip Split Calculator
Our tip calculator also makes it easy to split the tip among multiple people. Simply enter the total bill amount, the desired tip percentage, and the number of people sharing the bill. The calculator will then show you the individual tip amount and the total amount each person should contribute. This feature is perfect for groups dining out, friends sharing a taxi ride, or anyone splitting the cost of a service where a tip is given.
Is tip calculated before tax?
- Generally, tipping is calculated before tax.
- The reasoning behind this is that the tip is intended to reward the service provided by the staff, not the tax levied by the government.
- Therefore, the customary practice is to calculate the tip percentage based on the pre-tax subtotal of the bill.
However, there are some nuances:
- Practicality:
- Often, people simply calculate the tip on the final total (including tax) because it’s the number they see most prominently on the bill.
- In many cases, the difference in the tip amount is relatively small.
- Restaurant Practices:
- Some restaurants may have suggested gratuity amounts printed on the bill that are calculated after tax.
- Also some point of sale systems have the option to calculate tips before or after tax.
- Personal Preference:
- Ultimately, the decision of whether to tip before or after tax is a matter of personal preference.
